Garmin Motorcycle GPS
Posted by admin on March 25th, 2009 filed in GPS Systems, Garmin Motorcycle GPSReview Of The Garmin Zumo 550 Motorbike Gps Unit
The Garmin Zumo 550 is purpose built to be used as a GPS unit on a motorcycle and is one of only two GPS units designed as such. The look of this motorcycle GPS 550 is chic and full of passion. Its silver shell can be exchanged with numerous other designs, such as racing stripes and flames.![]()
Included in the Garmin Zumo 550 package are a surprisingly large number of tools and extras that you will find very handy. While there is a motorcycle mount with tools to attach it your bike, there is also a car mount for those who would also like to use the GPS unit inside their car. A power cable connects to your bike’s battery to power the device or - if you are in your car - a car charge.

Furthermore, there is a USB cable to sync and download software and updates, a City Navigator DVD, a CD-ROM of the owners manual and a quick setup guide for mounting.
The only thing lacking is a Bluetooth earpiece for the helmet. However, with so many other things included with the unit, this is not as much as a problem as it first appears. Also, there are quite a number of Bluetooth-integrated helmets and standalone earpieces for helmets that you can buy at a reasonable price.

There are two options for mounting the Garmin Zumo 550 to a motorcycle: a u-bolt mount or a clutch mount. The unit is compressed, measuring 4.8 inches wide, 3.9 inches high, and 1.6 inches deep and weighing 10.6 ounces - a hair lighter than the TomTom Rider’s 10.9 ounces.
The Zumo 550 meets IPX7 standards, which means it can endure immersion in water for up to thirty
minutes. One unique feature is the ability to choose the size of icons: standard and large.
While the Garmin Zumo 550 is purpose built for motorcycles, it can also work fantastically well in your car. This means that you can swap it between your car and motorcycle whenever you like. Inside the car, the GPS unit is place at eye level ensuring that you never have to take your eyes off the road for more than a second at a time.
The speaker volume is ideal. The Zumo’s UV resistant touch screen is a 3.5-inch (diagonal) with a 320×240 pixel resolution and a white backlight. In the end, this product is a good one and I totally recommend it.
