GPS for Motorcycles
GPS systems have become one of the best inventions for those that enjoy the luxury of travel and for those that have to travel for business. Instead of loosing your way to the campground or getting lost in a strange town you have an automated navigator in the car letting you know how many feet till your next right turn. But that is the problem, right? The navigator is in the car and when you decide you want to take a ride on your motorcycle you no longer have that navigator telling you that in 100 ft you are going to turn right…or do you. Creators of the GPS systems have answered the requests of motorcyclist by creating motorcycle mounts for GPS systems and creating GPS systems that are specifically meant for motorcycle use.
If you already own a GPS system you’re most likely looking for the right GPS mount for your motorcycle over buying a motorcycle specific GPS system. Choosing the right one, however, can be difficult. GPS system mounts are variable across the board. It is like 
trying to find the right car cover for your car. There are cheap, universal mounts and expensive, brand name and model specific mounts. The biggest concern for motorcyclist though is whether these mounts are sturdy enough to hold their GPS systems. Other concerns include, having to constantly look at the GPS since you no longer can hear the voice telling you what to do, glare on the GPS from the sun, and whether the GPS can handle the elements of weather. However, most mounts come with audio cables that can be used to allow a motorcycle headset to pick up the audio from the GPS system. Some mounts offer strategies to diminish glare like a screen cover that reduces the glare or an actual box that you set your GPS system into in order to eliminate both glare and worry of weather conditions. Unlike a specifically designed motorcycle GPS system your average GPS system is not waterproof and can be damaged in rain if you don’t have the proper mount or your mount is not working properly.
Specifically designed motorcycle GPS systems are more expensive than even the most expensive mount but being specifically designed for the motorcycle they offer relief for concerned riders. Motorcycle GPS systems have wireless headsets for the audio. The casings of the Motorcycle GPS systems are more rugged than your average GPS allowing it to handle the stress of weather, speed, and even being dropped. They are also weatherproof allowing ease of mind should it start to rain on your ride. The screen naturally reduces glare so there are no extra accessories needed. Since the GPS system is made for motorcycles the mount that comes with the GPS is sturdy and fits the system properly. Best of all the Motorcycle GPS systems can also transfer to use in the car without the need of addition accessories unlike a car GPS system for use on a motorcycle.
Therefore, you have two options. Buying a mount for a GPS system meant for use in the car or purchasing a GPS system specifically designed for motorcycle use. For those that already own a GPS system and do not wish to purchase another one the mount is a reasonable way to go. However, if you are just looking for your first GPS system and you own a motorcycle I would recommend buying a motorcycle specific GPS system. They are much easier to transfer to a car for use then the vice versa and they are more dependable and durable for use on a motorcycle without buying extra accessories.
